What is Hot Desking?

We hear so many stories about hot desking, what it is, what it is not? With the Veldhoen + Company explanation we want to end the discussion about Hot Desking once and for all and turn all misconceptions into a positive contribution to a better World of Work for you.

But first, what does the Business Dictionary say?:

“Practice of not giving employees (especially the salespeople) their own desk in the office. Instead, the firm provides a pool of fully equipped desks which are occupied as required. Hot-desking is possible where a firm’s databases and services can be easily accessed via wireless or telephone links.”

Note: "I do not even want to start what Wikipedia says about Hot Desking, but that’s up for the Wiki curators, I hope they read this"

The business dictionary explanation already starts of with a negative. Practice of NOT giving employees their own desk in the office. For me personally that sounds of something scary I do not want to participate in when working at a company who is mentioning Hot Desking or Activity Based Working as a driver for a new exciting workplace (or culture). I understand the second part of the explanation of the Business Dictionary is a little bit better but let's try to improve it step by step.

As an employee I would rather hear:

Practice of getting the opportunity to also work at another place in the office, other than your regular fixed workplace, which will better suit your activity at that moment, etc...”,

or in other words:

"He Team, instead of one, you will get ten new workplaces in the future that all suit your different kind of needs."
